Architect 2025: ‘Upwards’—A Bold Exploration of Space and Materiality

The Architect 2025 exhibition, Sri Lanka’s leading Architects' Work & Trade Exhibition, took place on February 21st, 22nd, and 23rd at BMICH, Colombo, bringing together creativity, innovation, and architectural excellence.

At our studio 2 student stall, visitors experienced ‘Upwards’, a unique installation that redefined space and volume, offering an immersive journey through different levels. The concept aimed to reach new heights—both metaphorically and literally—through a bold architectural expression.

The stall featured two striking towers:

  •  One cladded with cardboard egg cartons
  •  The other wrapped in plastic chicken slats from breeding farms

This juxtaposition of materials from the same family highlighted the contrast between textures while maintaining a shared quality—perforation for optimal air circulation and ventilation.

The installation defied traditional exhibition constraints, exceeding the 15-foot marquee and playing with heights, light, and shadow. Architectural models were elegantly displayed on plastic egg crates used in hatcheries, showcasing the students' creativity and innovative thinking.

The entire structure was stabilized using scaffolding, GI pipes, and clamps, forming an exoskeleton that balanced strength with a delicate yet durable cladding.

Thank you to everyone who visited and engaged with ‘Upwards’ at Architect 2025. Your enthusiasm and curiosity made this exploration of materials and space truly unforgettable!
